Why are classroom acoustics important? Because the way a student learns depends on what they hear and how they hear it.
A typical classroom contains multiple hard surfaces that reflect sound rather than absorb it, causing long reverberation times. Students surrounded by high, exposed ceilings, plasterboard walls, and bare floors are subject to hearing this reverberation leading to difficulty with sound intelligibility and consistency around the room. If they can't hear something clearly, they can't process it.
The maximum reverberation time for clear speech is about two seconds. The ideal time for classrooms or lecture spaces is lower than one second.
